How to use APLB AHA Cream
Use at night as your moisturiser, starting every other night. Pair with sunscreen in the morning. If you are already using an acid toner, alternate nights rather than layering.
What is in it
AHA
The honest description of an AHA is a controlled, very shallow exfoliation. Used two or three nights a week, it keeps the surface clear and makes everything applied afterwards absorb better. Used every night on top of a retinoid, it is how people end up with a compromised barrier. AHAs also increase sun sensitivity measurably, so daily sunscreen is not optional while you are using one. BHA
BHA suits oily and congested skin in a way that alpha hydroxy acids do not. Because it is soluble in oil, it gets to where the problem starts — inside the pore — instead of exfoliating the surface above it. Expect visible change on blackheads within a few weeks of consistent use. Expect some initial purging if your skin had a lot of congestion to clear, and do not respond to it by using more.
PHA
Polyhydroxy acids are the gentlest of the exfoliating acids. Their molecules are larger than AHA molecules, so they work more slowly and stay nearer the surface — less exfoliation per use, but far less irritation. They also hold water, so they hydrate while they exfoliate. PHA is the sensible choice for sensitive or reactive skin that cannot tolerate glycolic acid, and it is a common third acid in multi-acid formulas for exactly that balancing reason.
What to use it with
A moisturiser works best over something it can lock in, so it belongs after a serum rather than instead of one. A moisturiser is the last skincare step at night and the second-to-last in the morning, with sunscreen going over it. Its job is partly to hydrate and mostly to seal — it locks down the water and the actives applied beneath it, which is why even oily skin does better with one than without. Apply it to slightly damp skin and you will need noticeably less product.
