Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant: it binds water and holds it in the upper layers of skin. That is genuinely useful and also frequently oversold — it hydrates what is already there rather than adding anything new. The practical detail most people miss is that it needs water to work with. Apply it to damp skin and seal it with a moisturiser; apply it to dry skin in dry air and it can pull moisture the wrong way. Ceramides

Ceramides are lipids your skin already makes, and they are roughly half of what holds the outer barrier together. A moisturiser is the last skincare step at night and the second-to-last in the morning, with sunscreen going over it.
