What is in it
AHA
Alpha hydroxy acids work on the surface. They dissolve the bonds holding dead cells to one another, so the dull, rough layer lifts away instead of sitting there. Glycolic acid is the smallest of them and penetrates most readily, which makes it effective and also the most likely to sting. Kojic acid
Kojic acid is a by-product of fermentation — it was first isolated from the mould used to make sake — and it inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme that starts pigment production. That places it in the same family of action as arbutin and vitamin C, and it is frequently paired with them because the combination covers more of the pathway than any one of them alone. It can irritate at higher concentrations, so introduce it gradually.
Licorice root
Licorice root extract contributes glabridin, which inhibits tyrosinase, and glycyrrhizin, which calms inflammation. That pairing makes it useful for the specific problem of marks left behind by irritation — it works on the pigment and on the redness that keeps producing it. It is gentle, slow, and a sensible partner to stronger brightening actives.
