Centella asiatica
Centella asiatica is the plant behind almost every product marketed as “cica”. Its active fractions — madecassoside and asiaticoside among them — are studied for wound healing and calming irritated skin. In a routine, centella is what makes an otherwise demanding formula usable: it takes the edge off acids and retinoids and helps a stressed barrier settle. What to use it with

Where it fits in your routine
Exfoliation is the step people most often overdo. Two or three times a week is plenty for most skin, at night, on a night when you are not using a retinoid. The temptation after a good result is to increase the frequency; that is precisely how a healthy barrier becomes a reactive one. Always follow with a moisturiser, and always wear sunscreen the next morning.
Before you start
Patch test on a small area behind the ear or along the jaw before the first full application, particularly if your skin reacts easily. Introduce one new product at a time so that if something does not agree with you, you know which one it was.
