Rice extract

Rice extracts have been part of East Asian skincare for centuries, long before anyone measured why they worked. Modern formulas use rice water, rice bran and fermented rice ferment filtrate for a mixture of amino acids, vitamin E and mild antioxidants. The effect is a soft, even brightness rather than the targeted pigment work of an acid or a tyrosinase inhibitor — it makes skin look well, without treating anything specific. AHA

AHAs are water-soluble, which is the practical difference between them and BHA. They act across the surface rather than descending into the pore, so their strength is texture, dullness and the general look of skin that has stopped reflecting light. Concentration matters less than frequency: a modest percentage used consistently beats a high percentage used aggressively and then abandoned when skin reacts.

BHA

The reason salicylic acid has outlasted almost every other anti-blemish trend is that it treats the mechanism rather than the symptom. Blocked pores are sebum plus shed cells; BHA loosens both, inside the pore. It pairs badly with a retinoid on the same night for most people, and it pairs very well with niacinamide, which handles the oil production that caused the blockage in the first place.

Where it fits in your routine

Exfoliation is the step people most often overdo. Two or three times a week is plenty for most skin, at night, on a night when you are not using a retinoid. The temptation after a good result is to increase the frequency; that is precisely how a healthy barrier becomes a reactive one. Always follow with a moisturiser, and always wear sunscreen the next morning.

Before you start

Exfoliating acids increase sun sensitivity, so daily sunscreen matters more than usual while you are using this. Do not layer it with a retinoid on the same night until you know how your skin handles each on its own.
