Hyaluronic acid

Different molecular weights of hyaluronic acid sit at different depths, which is why good formulas use several rather than one. The larger fractions hold water at the surface and smooth immediately; the smaller ones travel further and hydrate less visibly but more usefully. None of it is permanent — hydration is maintenance, not a cure — but skin that is properly hydrated looks plumper and tolerates active ingredients better. Sunscreen needs to be removed properly at the end of the day, and it sits better over a well-hydrated base.
