What is in it

Retinol

Retinol is the best-evidenced ingredient in cosmetic skincare for fine lines and texture. Skin converts it in two steps into retinoic acid, which speeds cell turnover and prompts collagen production. That conversion is why it works more slowly than a prescription retinoid and why it is far better tolerated. Expect twelve weeks before firmness and line changes are honest rather than imagined, and expect a flaky, tight fortnight on the way there. Vitamin C

Vitamin C does two useful things at once: it interferes with the enzyme that produces pigment, and it neutralises some of the free radical damage that daylight causes. That makes it a morning ingredient — it works with sunscreen rather than replacing it. Pure L-ascorbic acid is the most studied form and also the most temperamental, oxidising when exposed to light and air. A darkening bottle is a real signal, not a cosmetic one.

Sunscreen is the final morning step, applied over moisturiser and under makeup, and it is the single most effective anti-ageing product in any routine. The amount matters as much as the product: roughly two finger-lengths for the face and neck, which is far more than most people apply. Reapply through the day if you are outdoors. Before you start

This is a night product. Start twice a week, build up slowly, and stop increasing the moment skin starts to feel tight rather than dry. Sunscreen the following morning is not optional. Do not use retinoids while pregnant or breastfeeding.

Keep this away from light and heat, and close it properly. Vitamin C oxidises with exposure — if the liquid turns deep yellow or brown, it has lost most of its potency and is worth replacing.
