Retinol
Retinol is the best-evidenced ingredient in cosmetic skincare for fine lines and texture. Skin converts it in two steps into retinoic acid, which speeds cell turnover and prompts collagen production. That conversion is why it works more slowly than a prescription retinoid and why it is far better tolerated. Expect twelve weeks before firmness and line changes are honest rather than imagined, and expect a flaky, tight fortnight on the way there.

Where it fits in your routine

That order matters more than people expect — the thinnest, most concentrated layer needs direct contact with skin, not a film of moisturiser in the way.
