WishCare Ceramide Lip Balm Natural — lips have almost no barrier of their own and no oil glands, and very little melanin — which is why they dry out first, and why sun damage and darkening show there before anywhere else on the face. Almost nobody puts sunscreen on them.

This balm carries SPF 50 PA++++ alongside ceramides for the dryness and niacinamide with kojic acid for the pigmentation. The finish in Natural is the sheerest of the four, closest to a clear balm with a hint of warmth. The texture is buttery rather than waxy, in a twist-up stick.

What is in it

Ceramides

Ceramides are lipids your skin already makes, and they are roughly half of what holds the outer barrier together. When that supply runs low — through age, over-exfoliation, harsh cleansing or cold dry air — water escapes and irritants get in. Applying ceramides tops up the mortar between the cells. The effect is unglamorous and important: less tightness, less stinging from products that used to be fine, and skin that stays comfortable through the day. Niacinamide

Niacinamide earns its place in Korean formulation because it solves several problems at once without conflict. It helps skin hold water, tempers sebum, and interrupts the handover of pigment from the cells that make it to the cells you see. That combination makes it the usual answer for oily skin that also looks uneven. It is stable in the bottle and forgiving in a routine, which is why it appears in toners, serums and creams alike.

Kojic acid

Kojic acid is a by-product of fermentation — it was first isolated from the mould used to make sake — and it inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme that starts pigment production. That places it in the same family of action as arbutin and vitamin C, and it is frequently paired with them because the combination covers more of the pathway than any one of them alone. It can irritate at higher concentrations, so introduce it gradually.
