The five-step Korean routine, simplified

The five-step Korean routine, simplified

The “ten-step Korean routine” is the first thing people hear about K-beauty, and it is also the fastest way to give up. You do not need ten steps. Most of the people we serve do well on five, and several do well on three.

Here is the frame we use when someone messages us asking where to start.

Step 1 — Cleanse

At night, if you wore sunscreen or makeup, cleanse twice: an oil-based cleanser first to dissolve what water cannot, then a gentle water-based wash. In the morning a single mild cleanser is usually enough.

The thing to avoid is the squeaky-tight feeling after washing. That tightness means the cleanser stripped more than it needed to, and skin often compensates by producing more oil later in the day.

Step 2 — Tone

A modern Korean toner is not the astringent your older sibling used. It is a thin, watery layer meant to rehydrate skin right after cleansing so the next steps spread more easily. Pat it in with your hands rather than a cotton pad — less product wasted, less friction.

Step 3 — Treat

This is the step where you target one thing: dryness, uneven tone, texture, or marks left behind by old breakouts. One serum. Not four.

If you are new, pick the concern that bothers you most today and ignore the rest for eight weeks. Skincare works slowly, and stacking five actives at once makes it impossible to tell what helped and what caused irritation.

Step 4 — Moisturise

A moisturiser seals the hydration you just applied. In Dhaka heat, a gel or gel-cream texture is usually more comfortable than a heavy balm; save the thicker creams for air-conditioned offices and the drier weeks of winter.

Step 5 — Sunscreen, every morning

If you only adopt one habit from this whole article, make it this one. Daily sun protection is the step with the strongest long-term evidence behind it, and it is the one most people skip. Apply it as the last step of your morning routine, and reapply if you are outside for long stretches.

A realistic three-step version

  • Morning: gentle cleanser → moisturiser → sunscreen
  • Night: oil cleanser (if you wore sunscreen or makeup) → gentle cleanser → moisturiser
  • Add later: one toner, then one serum, once the basics are a habit

That is a complete routine. Everything else is optional, and optional is fine.

Skincare is personal. Nothing here is medical advice — patch test anything new on your inner arm for a day or two, introduce one product at a time, and see a dermatologist for persistent or painful skin problems.
