CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser — CeraVe’s argument has always been that a cleanser should not damage the barrier it is washing. The three ceramides in this formula are the same lipids the barrier is built from, so what the surfactants remove, the formula partly replaces.

What is in it

Cleansers are judged on what they leave behind rather than what they remove. A well-made one lifts sunscreen, sebum and the day’s pollution while leaving the skin’s own lipids in place — the squeaky-clean feeling people were once taught to expect is actually the sound of a stripped barrier. What to use it with

Where it fits in your routine

Cleansing is where a routine either sets up well or goes wrong. Once in the evening is enough for most skin; twice is how barriers get damaged. If you wear sunscreen or makeup, an oil or balm first to dissolve it and a gentle water-based wash afterwards is the standard Korean approach, and it is standard because it works. In the morning, water or a very mild cleanser is usually all that is needed.

Before you start

Patch test on a small area behind the ear or along the jaw before the first full application, particularly if your skin reacts easily. Introduce one new product at a time so that if something does not agree with you, you know which one it was.
